This year, six Nobel prizes were awarded to distinguished personnel for their exemplary performance in respective fields.

Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine

Yoshinori Ohsumi, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Tokyo, Japan was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for his outstanding contributions in deciphering the genetic complexity of cellular autophagy. Oshumi’s seminal discovery of the molecular machinery involved in the functioning of autophagic genes is considered as a milestone in cell biological research. The research findings made by Oshumi are currently exploited for understanding pathological responses of the body and development of highly efficient therapeutic methods against pathogenic diseases.

Nobel Prize in Physics:

This year’s Nobel prize in Physics was divided in two. One half was awarded to David J. Thouless, University of Washington; while the other half was shared by F. Duncan M. Haldane, Princeton University and J. Michael Kosterlitz, Brown University for their impeccable contribution in our present day theoretical understanding of topological phase transitions of matter. Their research unraveled the secrets of exotic matter and made significant contributions towards the development of innovative materials for varied applications in material science and electronics.

Nobel Prize in Chemistry

The Nobel prize in Chemistry for outstanding contributions in the development of molecular machines was awarded jointly to Jean-Pierre Sauvage, Sir J. Fraser Stoddart and Bernard L. Feringa. These microscopic molecular machines are proposed as target specific drug delivery systems for the treatment of various acute and chronic diseases. These nanotechnology based molecular machines will definitely revolutionize future medical treatment practices.
